Golders Green Parish Church – Newsletter
3rd June 2020
I hope you are able to go to the church Facebook page and enjoy the birthday cards that some of our young people sent to me for the feast of Pentecost. Thank you so much to all our artists for their creativity and hard work.
One thing I have felt during the lock-down is just how quickly our festivals have come and gone. It only seems a moment ago I was thinking about Palm Sunday, making my own palm cross in the window of our home, then Easter was here and then was over, Ascension was next and now we have celebrated Pentecost and all of that in our own homes, this will be a year that we remember!
We asked the artists of the church to make birthday cards to mark Pentecost because this festival marks the beginning of the church, its birthday. So, the church is 1,990 years old!
Pentecost literally means 50th. We celebrate it 50 days after Easter Day, we remember how God sent the Holy Spirit to the first witnesses of the resurrection, they were then empowered to tell others what they had seen. They were the first witnesses, hence the old title (or at least the one my Mum always used) for last Sunday as ‘Whitsunday’.
For that is the church’s job, it began all those years ago and remains unchanged. The church is the witness to what God has done and is doing.
We will each find our own unique way to be a ‘witness’ but one thing we all share in common is that we all need God’s help, and the Holy Spirit is God’s answer to our prayer for help.
Happy birthday Church, and happy witnessing to you all.
Love
Rex
The Collect prayer for Pentecost
God, who as at this time
taught the hearts of your faithful people
by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit:
grant us by the same Spirit
to have a right judgement in all things
and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort;
through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen
On 4th June from 8:30pm-10pm we are lucky enough to have the author of 'Four Feet Under', Tamsen Courtenay, joining us to read passages from her amazing book which tells the real stores of 30 homeless people in London and her experiences of writing it. There will be a chance to ask questions and it will be a really interesting and thought provoking evening.
